Welcome to our Coastal Command series. This is Chapter 6 – The Adversaries.

In this chapter we look at the adversaries for RAF Coastal Command.

Understanding the U boats and their armament, we talk to Mark Lardas, author of Battle of the Atlantic 1939–41 – RAF Coastal Command’s Hardest Fight Against The U-Boats from Osprey publishing. Mark talks us through the different U Boat types and their specifications in an interesting view of the Coastal Command adversary!

We then take a look at how Admiral Dönitz called upon the Luftwaffe to provide a long-range spotting and shadowing unit to act as ‘eyes’ for his U-boats. Robert Forsyth talks us through how they used their Junkers Ju 290s far out into the Atlantic to hunt Allied shipping from his book ‘Shadow over the Atlantic – The Luftwaffe and the U-Boats: 1943–45’ (Published by Osprey Publishing).
